The Free and Easy Wanderer

By Marty Calliham, L.Ac.

The herbal formula Xiao Yao San, variously translated Free and Easy Wanderer, Rambling Formula, or Bupleurum and Tang Kuei, is a great one for the season of Spring.

Spring is the time to support the functions of the Liver organ system. This includes the liver's function of purifying the blood, and also ensuring that our vital energy or qi is moving smoothly.

Many of us experience irritability, anger, and frustration as the days lengthen in the spring. This is also a problem year-round, but particularly now. The stuck feeling inside is called "stagnation of Liver qi" in Chinese medicine.

Modern life literally creates stagnation of Liver qi, as we try to accomplish our work, deal with our relationships, plan for our future, and so on. We want to spring up and grow quickly like the plants and trees around us. We become frustrated when we feel we have to push ourselves.

Here are some tips for keeping the Liver organ system healthy: Include in your diet dark green leafy vegetables, green onions, celery, white beans, spelt, barley, lemon juice, and light cooking methods instead of heavy oils. Learn to relax with yoga, meditation, laughter, prayer, dance, singing, or tai chi. Give yourself time to experience acupuncture. Ask about herbs that can open up the stuck feeling so you can be a Free and Easy Wanderer.

Your Body Heals Itself

By Marty Calliham, L.Ac.

When given the opportunity, or a little push, the body has a magnificent way of healing itself. If pain or discomfort have been around awhile, it might take that little push that acupuncture can provide.

How can something as tiny and painless as an acupuncture needle bring about such profound changes to the body, that expensive modern medicine has been unable to accomplish?

I think it is because the body's system of homeostasis - the checks and balances that keep body temperature regulated, blood pressure normalized, hunger and digestion and elimination in perfect synchronization, and so forth - is a subtle system. It doesn't require heavy stimulus but only a nudge to correct any imbalance. It needs a series of nudges back to normalcy, until the body finally "gets it" and holds the correction.

It is sort of a like a small child who needs to be shown, not once, but several times, gently and consistently, how to brush her teeth, until she does it correctly. Or like training a climbing rose to grow up a trellis.

Once the body has relearned the correct movements, rhythms and processes, with careful and consistent direction, small changes can add up to a wonderful return to health.
