Survival

By Marty Calliham, L.Ac.

As I write, another welcome rain shower soothes the drying effects of the long summer drought. For most of us, it was the unrelenting heat that got our attention, but consider also the effects of continuous dryness. We become weary of eating the moistening foods, of exercising indoors, of drinking endless glasses of water, of feeling our faces parch when first getting into the car. All of this while we lived for a year through a severe economic dry spell, without hope of a quick recovery. Drought dried us out–our bodies, our pocketbooks, and our spirits.
There isn't much we can do about the weather (though some of us were fortunate enough to go north for the summer), but there are ways we can moisten our spirits and our hopes.
Yang is heat, light, energy, movement outward. Yang is exciting and stimulating and energizing. Modern American culture is in love with Yang. But Yang is no more important, no more present and no more necessary than its equal and opposite force, Yin.
Yin is moistening, nourishing, restoring, and resting. Yin is movement inward, remembering, drawing substance from the soil and settling our roots deep into the earth. Yin is listening to the life-giving, soothing rain. Yin is being-ness, it is peace, it is gratitude that we have food to eat and people to love. Yin is taking time, quieting our minds, appreciating the gift of life.
May all of us learn these lessons from the rain this autumn.
