ACUPUNCTURE Acupuncture originated as a healing practice in China over 4,000 years ago. It has gained increasing acceptance by benefiting many people who have not been helped by conventional medical methods. According to traditional Chinese medical theory, acupuncture works by stimulating the flow of qi, the basic energy force of life that flows through all living things. Qi travels along fourteen major channels or meridians. Acupuncture stimulates the body's ability to heal itself by activating specific points along the channels. This unblocks qi, increases the flow of qi, or restores the balance of qi. Modern research suggests that the needles trigger the release of endorphins (natural pain relievers), and stimulate the immune system to encourage healing. More research is needed to fully understand the mode of action. The needles are as thin as a strand of human hair and are one-time use disposable. Acupuncture needles are solid, and no medicines are injected through them. The needles may feel like a mosquito bite upon entry, then there may be a feeling of soreness or heaviness. Most people enjoy resting while the needles are in. Almost any painful condition may be treated with acupuncture. Some of the many conditions include allergies, asthma, arthritis, chronic diarrhea or constipation, low back pain, headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, shoulder pain, premenstrual syndrome, stress, and tendonitis. |
